Founded in 2016, Avocado specializes in bedding made from sustainably sourced and organic materials.
The Avocado Mattress, also known as the Avocado Green Mattress, is a latex hybrid that reflects the company’s rigorous commitment to eco-conscious practices. Materials like cotton, wool, and latex are certified organic and verified to not contain dangerous chemicals. Avocado also works to reduce plastic packaging and offsets carbon emissions to cancel out their footprint from shipping.
Since launching the original version of the Avocado Mattress, the company has started offering additional models that add either a pillow-top or box-top with thicker layers of natural latex. All of these models offer impressive performance with a blend of bounce and cushioning plus an exceptional ability to stay cool.
We put the Avocado Mattress to the test in our in-house test lab. We cover the findings from our analysis as well as other practical information about pricing, construction, and performance that can help you decide if this eco-friendly mattress is a good match for your needs.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Avocado Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Back sleeper

Dunks head in ice water to wake up
As a hot sleeper and a back sleeper, the Avocado holds a special place in my heart. The latex and coils are both excellent at allowing airflow through the bed, so they don’t trap heat like an all-foam mattress would. I slept cool and comfortable on the Avocado, even as the summer heat started rolling in. As far as back sleeping goes, the latex gives you this bouncy, floaty, cushy feel that helps you relax without hugging too close. It’s got a great balance of support and pressure relief.

Side sleeper

Has too many dogs in the bed
I love the Avocado. I’m a sucker for organic marketing, but I also think this mattress can back up its claims. Not only is it exceptionally comfortable, it provides great support and is great at not trapping heat. I find latex to be a bit too bouncy for me on an everyday basis, but for someone who moves a lot during the night, it’s a great choice.

I really like how this mattress feels. The latex makes the surface feel both cushy and bouncy, while the coils provide great overall stability. The extra support beneath my lower back and hips was icing on the cake.

Side Sleepers
The Avocado Mattress is a viable option for most side sleepers. In this position, cushioning around the hips and shoulders is paramount. That’s where most body weight is applied, and if a mattress is too soft or too hard, it can lead to misalignment that risks aches and pains.
Our testing team found that the standard Avocado Mattress performed best for side sleepers over 130 pounds. Even among this group, though, some felt that the mattress was too firm to accommodate their pressure points.
The pillow-top and box-top models both rated better for side sleepers since they have a plusher surface that can more effectively cushion the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds tend to prefer the box-top, and side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds lean toward the pillow-top.
Back Sleepers
The Avocado Mattress can provide high-quality support to back sleepers of any weight. Our testing found that back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds got the best results from the box-top model. Back sleepers over 130 pounds were very satisfied with both the standard and pillow-top.
To prevent strain in the lower back, sleepers in this position need a mattress with enough firmness to keep the body flat but a touch of cushioning to cradle the lumbar spine. The latex in the Avocado Mattress strikes a great balance, which makes it appealing to back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
The Avocado Mattress, especially in its standard model with a firm (7) feel, performed well for stomach sleepers in our test lab. The combination of its firmness level and resilient materials kept the sleep surface flat and stable, supporting spinal alignment when sleeping face down.
Because stomach sleepers typically need more mattress firmness, performance ratings decreased for the pillow-top and box-top models. The pillow-top was effective for many stomach sleepers under 230 pounds, and the box-top was a better match for sleepers under 130. The base model was best for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds.
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6.5
/ 10
This isn’t the choice for you if you want that “jumping next to a full wine glass” kind of isolation. It’s a latex mattress, which means that it’s naturally a lot bouncier than other mattress choices. Skip it if you have a bed partner that moves around a ton. – Logan
One of the main downsides of the Avocado Mattress is that it can cause vibrations from one person’s movement to be felt on the other side of the bed. This is a common issue with latex hybrids, which have plenty of bounce from their internal components.
This is most likely to be a problem if you or your bed partner sleep lightly. Otherwise, our testers said they noticed movement but weren’t really bothered by it.
Among the models of the Avocado Mattress, the pillow-top and box-top isolate more motion because of their softer feel with more cushioning.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
Personally, I thought the Avocado Green excelled at pressure relief — but as someone who hovers around 220 pounds, I recognize that lighter sleepers may not get the cradling they need. The pillow-top may be a necessary add-on if you prefer a closer contour from your sleep surface. – Brad
While the Avocado isn’t widely praised for its pressure relief, our testing team was pleasantly surprised. The standard model had sufficient cushioning for most sleepers, and the pillow-top and box-top models got even higher ranks thanks to their thicker comfort layers.
Your perceived pressure relief on this mattress can depend on your preferences and whether you like to be hugged by your mattress. While latex can soften impact, it lacks close contouring.
Temperature Control
9
/ 10
As a constant overheater, I really appreciate the combination of organic wool and cotton used to wick away heat and perspiration in the Avocado. I’d consider skipping the optional and box-top pillow-top if you overheat like me, as the added plushness may restrict airflow, meaning more heat buildup. – Danny
The Avocado Mattress is a great cooling mattress. In virtually every layer, you’ll find materials that combat hot sleeping. Wool and cotton are known for breathability, latex rarely collects heat, and coils allow air to flow through and cool things down.
All of the models scored very well in our tests of heat buildup, but the standard model slept the coolest. Because the pillow-top and box-top versions are softer, you may sink into the mattress more, which can trap some heat against your body.
Nevertheless, any of the Avocado Mattress models is a compelling choice for people who tend to overheat at night.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
The Avocado Green’s perimeter is really sturdy. I didn’t notice much sinkage when I got on and off the mattress. This is a mattress you can really sprawl across without feeling like you’re going to roll off the edges. – Brad
The robust coils and resilient latex give the Avocado Mattress substantial edge support. Our testing team praised the benefits of the reinforced perimeter on all versions of the mattress and appreciated how it made it easy to lie down or sit near the edge.
The strongest edge support is available from the standard model, which also has the firmest feel. The weakest edge support is in the softer box-top, but it still stays relatively stable across the mattress surface.
Ease of Movement
9
/ 10
The Avocado has a very bouncy design, making it incredibly easy to move around. The latex and coils that give the bed its floaty feel also keep you from sinking too deep into the surface. Even the pillow- and box-top models with thicker top layers are still pretty great when it comes to mobility. – Danny
Virtually everyone on our testing team was impressed with how easy it was to move on the surface of the Avocado Mattress. Unlike memory foam, which can cause you to feel trapped in place, latex and coils provide springiness that can actually help you adjust your body’s position.
Ease of movement is best on the firmer standard model, but you shouldn’t have difficulty moving on any of these options. This aspect of the Avocado’s performance is most important for combination sleepers and others who frequently roll over or modify their position in bed.
Off-Gassing
9
/ 10
The Avocado’s “new mattress smell” went away super quickly. In my experience, all mattresses kind of stink when you unwrap them, but this one went away in a few hours, which is way less than average. – Logan
Avocado takes pride in offering eco-friendly products made without toxic chemicals, which has an added benefit of limiting off-gassing.
That said, virtually every mattress will have some scent when first installed. With the Avocado, it’s usually a bit of a rubbery latex smell, but our testing found that the smell dissipated quickly. It also poses no harm to your health.
Avocado Mattress Review Breakdown
All of the versions of the Avocado Mattress are latex hybrids with a similar design, but the pillow-top and box-top options add extra layers of natural latex that modify the height and firmness of the mattress.
In every model, the cover is made with breathable cotton that has been certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
All the models have the same support core, which features an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils. The coils are zoned to reinforce the edges and other areas where heavier weight is applied to the bed. A 1-inch layer of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex sits beneath the coils.
The differences between the standard, pillow-top, and box-top models is in the design of their comfort layers. The standard model has a comfort system made with GOTS-certified organic wool and a 2-inch layer of GOLS-certified organic latex. The latex is produced using the Dunlop process, giving it a dense and resilient feel. The firmness level of this model is firm (7).
In the pillow-top model, there’s an extra 2-inch layer of this latex added to the comfort system. It has a firmness level of medium firm (6).
In the box-top model, there’s a layer of wool and then a 3-inch layer of lighter and bouncier Talalay latex at the top of the mattress. Beneath that is a 3-inch layer of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. The combination of these layers helps give this model a medium (5) firmness feel.
Avocado also offers a Vegan Mattress, which is otherwise the same but uses batting made of organic cotton instead of wool in the top of the mattress.

To make shipping more sustainable, Avocado compresses the mattress and uses recycled paper for much of the packaging. The company also offsets the carbon footprint from shipping its products.
To set up the mattress, you need to bring the box to your bedroom and remove all the packaging. Given the weight of the mattress, it usually requires two to three people to move the box and get everything set up.

Warranty
Avocado mattresses are covered by a 25-year warranty. During the first 10 years, the company will repair or replace a mattress with a defect at no cost to you. After 10 years, you are responsible for covering shipping and handling charges along with a percentage of the original mattress price.
