Above-average price for an all-foam mattress

The Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress made by Saatva, which manufactures a range of high-end mattresses. In the Loom & Leaf, the company has invested in a robust design featuring three layers of high-quality memory foam.

The Loom & Leaf is available in two firmness options that rate as medium firm (6) and firm (8). Unlike many plush memory foam mattresses, the Loom & Leaf contours to the body without pronounced sinkage. Another unique aspect of the Loom & Leaf is that it comes with free delivery and installation.

Our testing team analyzed this mattress and rated its performance in multiple categories. We’ll go over those ratings and explain the ins and outs of the Loom & Leaf, including its pricing, design, and who it’s best for.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Loom & Leaf Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Side sleeper

Talks in sleep (like a lot)

As a side sleeper, I found the Relaxed Firm model to be quite comfortable and supportive. It was refreshing to feel contouring around my hips and shoulders without the suffocating feeling of ultra-plush foams.

Hybrid sleeper

While there’s a lot to like about the Loom & Leaf, I didn’t find either model to be as versatile as I’d like. I switch my sleeping position during the night, and there was a pretty noticeable difference in comfort when I was on my side versus my back or stomach.

Back sleeper

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

It’s pretty uncommon to find a firm feel in a memory foam mattress, which made the Loom & Leaf a really nice change of pace. As a back sleeper, I really liked its mix of cushioning and support that helped prevent lower back strain.

Side Sleepers

The Loom & Leaf Mattress tends to earn the highest praise from side sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds. In particular, side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds give high marks to the medium firm (6) model, and those over 230 pounds prefer the firm (8) model.

In our testing, some side sleepers felt that the mattress was too firm. This response was most common among side sleepers under 130 pounds who reported insufficient cushioning around their hips and shoulders.

Side sleepers need cushioning for these pressure points in order to avoid joint discomfort and maintain spinal alignment. Sleepers with a higher body weight appreciated how the memory foam cradled their hips and shoulders while maintaining its base of support.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers can get excellent support and comfort from the Loom & Leaf Mattress. In our testing, back sleepers under 130 pounds preferred the medium firm (6) version, and those over 130 pounds preferred the firm (8).

Many memory foam mattresses feel too soft for back sleepers, but that wasn’t the case with the Loom & Leaf. Its firmer feel kept back sleepers from sinking too far down into the foam layers. The mattress facilitated a neutral spinal position and provided extra lower back support with a memory foam lumbar pad.

Stomach Sleepers

The firm (8) model of the Loom & Leaf Mattress won over stomach sleepers during our testing. They didn’t feel like they were being swallowed up by the mattress, but they still got the benefit of memory foam’s gentle pressure relief.

The medium firm (6) model didn’t score as well among stomach sleepers. While it was rated highest by those under 130 pounds, it was generally too soft and contouring for the majority of stomach sleepers.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8/10

Loom & Leaf – Relaxed Firm: 8 / 10

Loom & Leaf – Firm: 7.5 / 10

LOOM_LEAF_MOTIONISO

“Like most memory foam beds, the Loom & Leaf keeps motion isolated to one side of the bed. It’s a solid pick for couples.” – Colin

The Loom & Leaf scores solidly above average for motion isolation. One of the key characteristics of memory foam is its pinpoint response, which means that it only compresses in areas where weight is directly applied.

As a result, vibration doesn’t travel across the surface of the Loom & Leaf Mattress. The medium firm (6) model rates as slightly better for motion isolation, but both firmness options should work well for couples.

Pressure Relief

8/10

LOOM_LEAF_PRESSURE_BACK

“All of the memory foam in the mattress really makes a difference, including the lumbar pad. Both models can provide great pressure relief as long as you pick the right one for your needs.” – Danny

Pressure relief provided by the Loom & Leaf repeatedly impressed our testing team. With multiple layers of memory foam, the mattress can softly cradle your joints and provide support where you need it most.

People who have sharper pressure points, including most side sleepers, tend to prefer the medium firm (6) model. Sleepers who want a bit more firmness and a flatter sleeping surface get the best results from the firm (8) option.

Temperature Control

7/10

Loom & Leaf – Relaxed Firm: 7 / 10

Loom & Leaf – Firm: 7.5 / 10

LOOM_LEAF_HEATCAM

“I expected this mattress to feel really hot, but I was pleasantly surprised by its temperature control. It’s not the coolest mattress out there, but because you don’t sink in too far, your skin doesn’t overheat and get clammy.” – Colin

Our team felt pleasantly surprised by how well the Loom & Leaf avoids overheating. Most memory foam materials collect heat, but our team didn’t find themselves waking up in a sweat on this mattress.

A big reason for the cooler sleep on the Loom & Leaf is that the foam doesn’t excessively conform to the body. The top layers are also infused with gel to counteract the heat retention that occurs in traditional memory foam mattresses.

Edge Support

7/10

Loom & Leaf – Relaxed Firm: 6 / 10

Loom & Leaf – Firm: 7 / 10

LOOM_LEAF_EDGETEST_2

“Edge support isn’t a standout feature of the Loom & Leaf, but it’s better than a lot of foam beds. I wouldn’t recommend jumping up and down on the edge of the bed, but it’s definitely stable enough for everyday uses.” – Mary

Edge support on the Loom & Leaf is just above average, which means you’ll feel increased foam compression around the perimeter without the sensation that you’re going to roll off the bed.

This level of edge support is better than what you’ll find in a lot of other memory foam mattresses. Of the two models, the edge feels stronger on the firm (8) model of the Loom & Leaf.

Ease of Movement

6/10

Loom & Leaf – Relaxed Firm: 6 / 10

Loom & Leaf – Firm: 7 / 10

“Movement wasn’t exactly easy on the Loom & Leaf, but it wasn’t too difficult, either. I don’t think this would be a problem unless you have a strong preference for a bouncy mattress.” – Danny

One downside of memory foam is that its contouring can impede your ability to move around in bed. We found this to be only a minor issue on the Loom & Leaf.

Because the mattress isn’t exceedingly soft, you don’t sink too deeply into the memory foam. As a result, you don’t feel as restricted when you want to switch your sleeping position. That’s especially true on the firm (8) model.

Off-Gassing

8.5/10

“Since the Loom & Leaf doesn’t get compressed after being manufactured, it doesn’t have the chemical smell that you get from most mattresses that are shipped in a box. Instead, it just smells like new fabric, which actually smells kind of nice.” – Mary

There’s virtually no off-gassing from the Loom & Leaf Mattress. Any “new mattress smell” is faint and fades away within a few hours.

Most mattress off-gassing happens after a mattress is compressed and sealed in plastic, which traps volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the manufacturing process. But the Loom & Leaf is never compressed. It gets hand-delivered to your home, which means there’s much less of the off-gassing that occurs with other all-foam beds.

Loom & Leaf Mattress Review Breakdown

The Loom & Leaf is 12 inches tall and made entirely with foam. It stands out from many other all-foam mattresses by including three layers of memory foam.

The top layer of memory foam is a gel-infused lumbar pad, which is meant to provide a touch of extra cushioning for the lower back. The next layer is 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam that isolates motion and gently contours to the body’s heaviest points.

Beneath that, there’s another 2.5-inch layer of memory foam and a 2-inch layer of transition polyfoam. The support core is made of 5.5 inches of high-density polyfoam. The mattress cover is organic cotton, adding softness and breathability to the exterior.

The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness options. One, which the company calls Relaxed Firm, rates as medium firm, or a 6 on our firmness scale of 1-10. The Firm version of the mattress rates as an 8 on our scale.
