With a reversible design, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is built around the idea that two is better than one. Instead of locking yourself into a single firmness level, the Layla Mattress lets you switch from medium soft (4) to firm (7) by just flipping the mattress over.

On top of that, Layla uses copper-infused memory foam on each side of the mattress. This material offers cushioning and comfort but is engineered to collect less heat than traditional memory foam.

Our team put the Layla Memory Foam Mattress through our rigorous in-house testing to see for ourselves where it stands out and where it falls flat. We go over the results of our testing and cover everything you need to know about the construction, pricing, and performance of the Layla Mattress.

Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Layla Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

Side sleeper

Has too many dogs in the bed

I’ll start by saying I’m not a huge fan of memory foam mattresses. I’m more of a hybrid girl. But the flippable Layla design is a fun and unique approach to solving the problem of finding the right firmness for you. It offers great motion isolation and contouring, but it lacks some of the support I need as a side sleeper.

Showers before bed

For me, both sides of this mattress were good, but neither was great. The materials seemed high-quality, but each side fell short of my ideal support level. On the soft side, there was a bit too much sink, and on the firm side, there was a bit too much impact around the hips and shoulders.

Back sleeper

Dunks head in ice water to wake up

This was definitely a tale of two mattresses for me. As a back sleeper, the firm side was fantastic, offering a great combination of stability and light contouring. In contrast, the soft side was too squishy. Of the two sides, the firm one is definitely the way to go for back and stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The Layla Mattress offers uneven results for side sleepers. In our testing, this mattress was best for side sleepers under 130 pounds who can take advantage of the plush, contouring feel of the medium soft (4) side without pushing deeply into the foam layers.

Side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds get roughly average support from both sides of the mattress. However, neither side strikes the optimal balance of cushioning and support for these sleepers. Some side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds like the firm (7) side, but most find that it has a bit too much sink.

Back Sleepers

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress performed well among back sleepers in our testing. Its firm (7) side got especially high marks from back sleepers, with the highest rating from those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.

For these sleepers, the mattress had enough pushback and stability to keep their midsection from slumping into the foam. At the same time, the light contouring of memory foam cradled the lumbar spine, offering comfort and contributing to spinal alignment.

Bak sleepers under 130 pounds liked the Layla Mattress but didn’t find either side to be a perfect match. Those over 230 pounds found even the firm (7) side to be more conforming and plush than they typically prefer.

Stomach Sleepers

Only the firm (7) side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress provided quality support to stomach sleepers during our testing. The mattress got the highest ratings from stomach sleepers with a weight between 130 and 230 pounds. They experienced solid cushioning of the lower back without excessive sinkage.

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds also liked the mattress since the memory foam offered an inviting feel that wasn’t too plush. Those over 230 pounds got adequate support but were more inclined to say that the mattress was softer than ideal.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7 / 10

Soft Side: 8 / 10

Firm Side: 6.5 / 10

“The Layla has the key characteristics of a memory foam mattress, so it’s great at isolating motion. You won’t feel your partner moving nearly as much as you would in a hybrid or latex model.” – Logan

Thanks to the memory foam on both sides, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress effectively reduces the amount of vibration that spreads from one side of the bed to the other.

That said, in our testing, it was clear that the softer side provided considerably more motion isolation. For couples who want a plush feel that limits motion transfer, the Layla Mattress is a solid fit.

Pressure Relief

6 / 10

Soft Side: 8 / 10

Firm Side: 5 / 10

“Both sides of this mattress offer solid pressure relief from the contouring memory foam. But the support level isn’t universal because the two sides offer different results based on your body shape and sleep position.” – Danny

Memory foam contours to your hot spots and pain points, giving the Layla Mattress a solid level of pressure relief. However, many sleepers will find that they only get enough support from one of the two sides.

For example, the medium soft (4) side is too plush for many sleepers, especially back and stomach sleepers and people over 230 pounds. The firm (7) side is too hard for many side sleepers but can deliver great support to many back sleepers.

Temperature Control

7 / 10

Soft Side: 6.5 / 10

Firm Side: 8 / 10

“Memory foam is notorious for trapping heat, and the Layla is no exception. It features copper elements to promote cooling, but I’ve found that it doesn’t fully resolve the issue, especially on the soft side.” – Logan

Heat retention is noticeable but not excessive on the Layla Memory Foam Mattress. With a thinner layer of memory foam, the firm (7) side tends to resist heat buildup far better than the medium soft (4) side.

Layla incorporates cooling features like copper-infused and aerated foams to try to enhance temperature regulation, but this mattress may still be too warm for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Soft Side: 5 / 10

Firm Side: 6.5 / 10

“This mattress isn’t going to win any awards for edge support. There’s clear compression around the perimeter, and it’s especially pronounced on the soft side.” – Jackson

Edge support is one of the weak points of the Layla Mattress. While it doesn’t feel totally unstable, the foam layers are considerably weaker around the edge of the mattress. As you would suspect, there’s more sinkage around the perimeter on the medium soft (4) side.

Our testing team found that edge support was lacking, but most said that they didn’t think it was a dealbreaker unless you frequently sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress. They also noted that the edge support of the Layla Mattress is comparable to most other all-foam beds.

Ease of Movement

5.5 / 10

Soft Side: 5 / 10

Firm Side: 6.5 / 10

“I don’t move around that much in my sleep, but when I did want to adjust my body position, I found it much easier on the firm side. There was a lot of resistance from the foam on the soft side.” – Danny

The conforming feel of memory foam can impede movement, which was something that all of our testers noticed. With the additional plushness on the medium soft (4) side, it was a bit of a struggle to switch sleeping positions. Movement was quite a bit easier on the firm (7) side.

For most people, reduced ease of movement isn’t reason enough to pick a different mattress. But it may be a serious issue for combination sleepers or anyone who frequently turns over or adjusts their body’s positioning in bed.

Off-Gassing

6 / 10

“Like just about any all-foam mattress, this one gives off a smell when you take it out of the box. It’s not that strong and doesn’t last too long, though. For me, it was gone in about a day.” – Jackson

It’s almost assured that you’ll notice some smell when you open up the packaging of the Layla Mattress. But our testers said that the smell wasn’t overpowering, and they didn’t detect much of a scent after 24 to 36 hours. Using a fan or opening a window can help eliminate any remaining odor.

Layla Mattress Review Breakdown

The 10.5-inch Layla Memory Foam Mattress has a unique, reversible design with a different firmness level on each side. Regardless of which side you use, there’s a layer of copper-infused gel memory foam designed to cushion the body while minimizing heat retention.

In the center of the mattress is a support core made of high-density polyfoam. On the medium soft (4) side, the top layer is memory foam, and the second layer is adaptive polyfoam arranged into zones to cushion heavier parts of the body. On the firm side, there is only a thin layer of memory foam.

The mattress cover is made with a blend of polyester, rayon, viscose, and poly-Lycra fabrics in order to give it a soft and stretchy feel. A pair of labels on the mattress make it easy to identify which side is medium soft (4) and which is firm (7).
