Sizing and Weight Options

Aside from the company and specific model, mattress size is perhaps the most important choice you’ll make when buying a new mattress. Your mattress size matters for several reasons. First, mattress size can affect your sleep quality. If your mattress is too small, you won’t get a restful night’s sleep. And for those sharing a bed with a partner or child, you’ll need to make sure that your mattress has enough space to comfortably accommodate more than one person.

Second, if you already own a bed frame or have a small bedroom, you’ll want to choose a mattress that suits your constraints in terms of size as well as height. Lastly, the weight of the mattress may affect how easy it will be to move or transport your mattress.

While there are exceptions, most mattress brands offer a full range of sizes from twin to California king. We’ll highlight the most important sizing information you’ll need to compare Leesa vs Layla mattresses.

Layla offers two distinct mattress models while Leesa offers three. Both companies have all-foam models (the Layla Memory Foam and the Leesa Original) as well as hybrid models (the Layla Hybrid, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid, and the Leesa Legend).

All-foam mattresses tend to be lighter than their hybrid counterparts that contain metal springs. As a result, customers who would like to be able to easily move or transport their mattress may prefer an all-foam model.

Each company provides a full range of sizes and a variety of mattress heights. It’s also important to note that the Leesa Legend, Leesa’s luxury hybrid mattress, does not come in twin size.

If you prefer a higher profile mattress, the Layla Hybrid is your best choice at 13 inches in height. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a low-profile mattress under 10 inches in height, you may want to look elsewhere. However, both Layla and Leesa offer mattresses that can accommodate most typical bed frames and bedrooms.

Construction and Materials Comparison

Mattress construction and materials can have a significant impact on comfort, support, and durability. When comparing Layla vs Leesa, each company makes both an all-foam mattress model as well as hybrid models.

  • All-Foam: An all-foam mattress is constructed entirely from different types of foam material. Construction can include layers of both memory foam and polyfoam. All-foam mattresses usually have at least one layer of high-density foam to make up the bed’s base or support core. While all-foam mattresses are not as durable as other types of mattresses, they are usually lighter and more affordable.
  • Hybrid: A hybrid mattress combines layers of the two most commonly used mattress materials, foam and coils. This category of bed typically has a foam-based comfort layer and a spring-based support core, however, layers of microcoils can also be incorporated into the comfort system. Hybrids are designed to give sleepers the benefits of these two materials while minimizing their downsides. Hybrid mattresses can be more expensive than their all-foam counterparts, but they are usually considered more durable.

We’ll take a closer look at the construction and materials of each Layla and Leesa mattress.

Layla

Layla offers two different mattresses, an all-foam model and a hybrid model.

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is an all-foam mattress made with:

  • 63% polyester, 26% rayon, 6% viscose, 5% poly-Lycra blend cover
  • 3-inch copper infused memory foam comfort layer
  • 2-inch zoned polyfoam transitional layer
  • 4.5-inch polyfoam support core
  • 1-inch copper-infused memory foam comfort layer

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is uniquely designed to offer two comfort options. One side of the mattress is made with 3 inches of copper-infused memory foam and a second layer of zoned polyfoam. This side provides a medium soft (4) comfort level.

The other side of the mattress has only 1 inch of copper-infused memory foam, creating a firm (7) sleep surface. The two comfort systems surround the Layla’s support core, which consists of 4.5 inches of high-density polyfoam.

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress comes with a polyester blend cover. The mattress is designed so that sleepers can flip it to change between firmness levels without removing the mattress cover. However, the cover contains a zipper and can be removed for cleaning.

The Layla Hybrid Mattress is a hybrid mattress made with:

  • 63% polyester, 26% rayon, 6% viscose, 5% poly-Lycra blend
  • 2.5-inch copper-infused memory foam layer
  • 2-inch Tri-Zone Airflow polyfoam layer
  • 6-inch pocketed coil support core
  • 1.5-inch Tri-Zone Airflow polyfoam later
  • 1-inch copper-infused memory foam

The Layla Hybrid contains both foam and pocketed coil construction. Similar to the Layla Memory Foam mattress, the Layla Hybrid is also reversible and can be flipped to change the firmness level of the sleep surface. The Layla Hybrid’s cover is made with a polyester blend and contains sturdy vinyl handles to make moving the mattress easier.

One side of the comfort system is made up of 2.5 inches of cooling copper-infused memory foam and 2 inches of breathable Tri-Zone Airflow polyfoam. This side provides medium soft (4) comfort.

For sleepers who prefer a firm sleep surface, the other side of the Layla Hybrid contains a 1-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam and a 1.5-inch layer of Tri-Zone Airflow polyfoam. Between each comfort system sits a 6-inch layer of pocketed coils, providing a durable support core.

Leesa

Leesa’s lineup includes three mattress models: an all-foam mattress and two hybrids.

The Leesa Original is an all-foam mattress made with:

  • Polyester blend cover
  • 2-inch polyfoam comfort layer
  • 2-inch memory foam pressure-relief layer
  • 6-inch polyfoam support core

The Leesa Original is Leesa’s flagship model and most popular mattress. This mattress features a two-tiered comfort system made up of memory foam and polyfoam layers. The comfort layers work together to create body-contouring comfort that helps relieve pressure points. The 6-inch support core is made of high-density polyfoam, creating a firm base to brace the bed’s comfort layers. The mattress cover is made from a blend of polyester and lycra that is soft and breathable yet durable.

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is a hybrid mattress made with:

  • Cotton blend cover
  • 1.5-inch perforated polyfoam layer
  • 1.5-inch memory foam layer
  • 1-inch polyfoam layer
  • 1-inch polyfoam transition layer
  • 6-inch pocketed metal coils

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is constructed with five distinct layers. The comfort system is made with a top layer of perforated polyfoam for breathability and two additional foam layers, one of memory and one of polyfoam. This comfort system offers close, body-conforming comfort with additional breathability.

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid’s support core consists of 6 inches of pocketed metal coils which provide a strong and resilient base. An additional layer of polyfoam sits beneath the pocketed coils for reinforcement. The mattress cover is quilted and made from a cotton blend. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid provides a moderate upgrade compared to the Leesa Original but is still reasonably priced, especially when compared to Leesa’s luxury Legend line.

The Leesa Legend is a luxury hybrid mattress made with:

  • Cover made of blended polyester, recycled PES, cotton, merino wool, rayon, and spandex
  • 1-inch aerated polyfoam layer
  • 1-inch memory foam layer
  • 1.5-inch micro-coils zoned with polyfoam
  • 1-inch polyfoam transition layer
  • 6-inch pocketed metal coil support core
  • 1-inch polyfoam layer

The Leesa Legend is the company’s newest mattress and represents their highest end model. This mattress is a hybrid that is constructed with six different layers for a total thickness of 12 inches. The mattress cover is made with a soft mixed fabric that has the temperature-regulating properties of both cotton and wool.

The Leesa Legend’s comfort system is made up of three layers. The first is a ventilated layer of high-density polyfoam that’s both breathable and durable. The next layer is a lower density memory foam that adds contouring comfort to the feel of the Legend. Lastly, the Legend’s comfort system has a zoned layer of microcoils. The head and leg areas contain coils while the middle section contains polyfoam for additional pressure relief, which makes this a great mattress for people with back pain.

A transitional layer of 1 inch polyfoam prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress and contacting the coil support layer. The support core contains 6 inches of pocketed coils, representing over 1,000 individually encased metal coils. This layer adds both resilient bounce and support as well as durability to the mattress. A final layer of transitional polyfoam acts as a stabilizing base.

In-Depth Ratings

When deciding which mattress to buy, much of the choice will come down your personal preferences. Everyone has their own priorities and individual taste—what might be comfortable for one sleeper will lead a night of tossing and turning for another. Each of the categories below affects mattress performance in a different way and will help you identify how well a particular mattress suits your unique needs.

  • Durability: A new mattress is a large purchase and you’ll want to have an accurate idea regarding its expected lifespan. It can be difficult to evaluate durability for newer brands and mattress models that haven’t yet been tested by time. However, most mattresses will last between 6-8 years before they show serious signs of wear-and-tear. Some mattresses can even last 10-20 years. Mattress materials are one of the largest contributors to durability. For example, hybrid mattresses with a metal coil support core tend to be more durable than all-foam mattresses. Sleeper weight, how often the mattress is rotated and cleaned, and climate can also affect the durability of your mattress.
  • Motion Isolation: This performance category refers to the ability of a mattress to reduce motion transfer across its surface so that movement on one side of the bed cannot be felt on the other side of the bed. This performance category is most important for people who share a bed with another person. When motion transfer is minimized, you’ll be less likely to disturb your partner when changing sleep positions or getting up to use the bathroom during the night. If you sleep alone, you won’t need to give this category as much consideration when choosing a mattress.
  • Sex: People use their mattresses for more than just sleeping. Therefore, you should evaluate how a mattress will perform in terms of sexual activity as well as sleep. The general rule of thumb is that mattresses with more bounce are better for sex. That’s because a slight bounce in a bed’s surface makes it easier to move and change positions. In contrast, mattresses with a high amount of body-contouring create the feeling of sinking into the mattress surface which can make movement more difficult.
  • Temperature Neutrality: No one likes to wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat. Temperature neutrality refers to how well a mattress helps regulate your temperature as you sleep. You can control your body temperature by changing your sheets, blankets, pajamas, and thermostat. However, some mattresses can cause you to sleep hotter by restricting airflow and absorbing and retaining your body heat.
  • Pressure Relief: This category refers to how well a mattress molds to the shape of your body to relieve major pressure point areas such as the shoulders and hips. Mattresses with a higher degree of body-contouring will offer the greatest amount of pressure relief. All-foam mattresses typically score well in this category. This is also the reason why hybrid mattresses almost always contain a top comfort layer composed of foam.
  • Off-gassing: New mattresses often give off a chemical smell, a process known as off-gassing, after unpacking. This smell comes from the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in the mattress manufacturing process. VOCs are not toxic, but they can give off a noticeable odor. Depending on how they were produced, certain mattresses will off-gas more than others.
  • Ease of Movement: For sleepers who are less mobile, you’ll want to consider how easy it is to move around on your mattress. The more resilient a mattress is, the easier movement will be. Resilience refers to bounce, or how quickly a surface retakes its shape once weight is removed. The only caveat is that highly resilient mattresses also tend to have a greater amount of motion transfer.
  • Edge Support: A mattress that can fully support your body weight at its perimeter has excellent edge support. Mattresses lacking strong edge support will sag when weighted at the edges. Good edge support increases the usable surface area of your bed and also makes getting up from bed much easier. Softer mattresses and all-foam mattresses tend to have less than average edge support unless the mattress perimeter has been purposefully reinforced.

In-Depth Pricing

A mattress is a significant purchase in terms of price, but it represents a high value for your dollar. Adults need at least 7 hours of high-quality sleep every night to maintain good health. That means we spend a significant portion of our lives asleep on our mattress. Additionally, a new mattress should last most sleepers close to a decade or more.

However, everyone has a different budget. Luckily, a quality mattress backed by warranty can be found at nearly every price range. How much you’re willing to spend will help inform what type of mattress will be best for you.

The two major factors that affect mattress price are the size and the materials. The larger the mattress, the more you can expect to spend. Similarly, more durable materials will cost more. For example, all-foam mattresses tend to be relatively inexpensive but may not last as long as higher priced hybrid mattresses.

Below is a table of the current prices comparing Layla mattresses vs Leesa mattresses. The range from under $1000 to over $2000. Remember, these prices represent the standard MSRP or the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Most mattress companies have frequent promotional sales and you can easily find deals online (including here) that will significantly lower the price of your new mattress.

Overall, Leesa and Layla mattresses both offer a good value and each brand has something to offer shoppers with a range of budgets. Layla and Leesa mattresses are also both made in the United States. However, Leesa goes the extra mile with its B corporation certification. This means the company balances profit and purpose by considering its impact on workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

For price-conscious shoppers, the Leesa Original and the Layla Memory Foam Mattress are the best choice when comparing Leesa vs Layla mattresses. These two models represent each brands’ basic all-foam style mattress. While this means the price tag is a bit lower, both mattresses are made with high quality, CertiPUR-US-Certified materials.

However, if your budget is a bit higher, the Layla Hybrid and Leesa Sapira Hybrid represent an excellent value. Although you’ll likely spend over $1000, the hybrid construction means they’ll stand the test of time better than an all-foam mattress. And if price is no object and you’re looking for a mattress loaded with special features, the Leesa Legend is the best choice as Layla does not offer a similarly priced luxury mattress option.
